Why is therapy so expensive?

Therapy can be expensive, I understand. Especially when your therapist does not accept your insurance or insurance altogether.

My rates are based on the following factors...

Education

To provide mental health counseling, I have obtained a master’s degree with a completion of a practicum and Internship in addition to passing two comprehensive exams. Upon the completion of graduating, therapist must then complete and pay for 3,000 hours of supervised experience with 2,000 of those hours being direct client contact hours and a minimum of 100 face to face supervision hours.

Specialized & Continued Education

Therapists pay $200 every two years to maintain an active license with the North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors. Therapists are also required to hold liability insurance which also averages around $200 per year. Therapists are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of continued education every 2 years. Continued education can vary in cost, however specialized trainings (such as EMDR $1500 or IFS $4000) and certifications can be very expensive. I continue to enroll in specialized trainings to better serve the clients I am honored to work with as well as expand my knowledge for professional growth and development within the mental health field. I have completed EMDR - Level 1 and IFS Level 1 Trainings.

Learning and Research

Apart from continued education requirements, therapists will invest in books, workbooks, kits, research journals/articles & other resources to help expand our knowledge and expertise. This process is an ongoing endeavor.

Experience & Skills

With many things, time can benefit the process. Over time as therapists practice, their experience grows and evolves. Some therapists may become specialized providers regarding a particular area or areas of interest. This experience and expertise will serve them as they will be better informed in their specialty. It’s important to note what a therapist may specialize in or have experience with to choose a therapist that best fits your needs.

Time

Therapists not only spend one-on-one time with the clients (53+ minutes), but must also set aside time to document which is required for each session. If a therapist accepts insurance, there are even more documentation requirements that are essential for insurance reimbursement (often insurance will not cover the entire session costs & the therapist will experience a loss). Your therapist may also be involved in consultation, or collaboration and research regarding interventions or technique to improve overall treatment outcomes. I am currently in an EMDR consultation group.

Administrative Costs

Outside of costs that are associated with requirements for therapist, there are also many administrative costs associated with a therapist’s daily, monthly and yearly expenses. Some of these expenses can include electronic medical record systems, office rent, billing services, office supplies, marketing platforms (Psychology Today), website and domain fees, legal and accounting services, taxes (these are not already taken out as most therapists in private practice are not W-2 employees), etc.
